Old Glossop Independent Councillor Ivan Bell responds to Councillor Tony Kemp.

Tony Kemp3"Following the recent flurry of press releases and letters from Buxton Conservative Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tony Kemp [right] I wish to make the following statement and comments about the council's decision to consign tourism in Glossop and its surrounding areas to the dustbin.

"First, at no time have I asked for the same amount of taxpayers' money to be pumped into Glossop as is being pumped into Buxton Museum and TIC. However I am asking the council to give us a level playing field, ie: rent free premises in Glossop town centre, council staff to man it, and full council support.

"In the meantime, as well as a limited brochure service from Glossop Municipal buildings, the now unofficial Glossop TIC website, http://www.glossoptouristcentre.co.uk/ will continue in a modified form to provide local accommodation details, and all brochures for the Glossop area will be converted into pdf documents so they can be downloaded easily.

"The Heritage Centre website, http://www.glossopheritage.co.uk/, is also going to be modified, with an online shop, online family information, and eventually a virtual tour of Glossop's history.

"These sites will continue to be maintained by myself and other unpaid volunteers at no cost to the council.

Pavilion Gardens"I have now obtained Buxton's TIC cost with the help of the Freedom of Information Act. This information is being analysed and will be published shortly.

"However one glaring mis-statement by Councillor Kemp has come to light (thanks to the FOIA). He stated in one of his letters that the Buxton TIC had made £35,422.50 in income from bookings.

"This is untrue, the Buxton TIC income from these bookings was £3,871.68 and the inflated figure was the total value of the TIC referred bookings to local hoteliers.

"The council and certain councillors have continually stated I could have obtained costs without the FOIA. Unfortunately (as the above statement proves) with the amount of propaganda, spin and mis-information that it often spews out, the true facts are lost."
