Richard FleeshmanA BBC television crew is filming a new drama with the working title The Choir Project on the moors above Monks Road. The series of six one-hour episodes is written by Debbie Horsfield (writer of Cutting It and Sex, Chips and Rock'n'Roll), who lives in Broadbottom.

High Peak borough council is arranging to meet people who petitioned for more allotments in Glossopdale.

John Haken, executive councillor for environmental services, said: "The council has already recognised the importance of access to local allotments in Glossopdale and we sympathise with residents who are on our waiting lists... We will be working closely with the residents to identify possible sites so that together we can establish more allotments in the Glossopdale area." Details here.

Members of the newly-formed Glossopdale Action For Allotments (GAFA) presented a petition with more than 450 signatures to Phil Wiggins, of High Peak Council's parks department on Friday, November 7. They have a blog here.

Phill Booth from Chapel Street, who runs Glossop's one-man aid organisation, English Effort To End Poverty (EETEP), reports on the progress of the new children's orphanage in Coimbatore in India.

Ali NuumbembeNamibian boxer Paulus 'Ali' Nuumbembe lost his bid for the WBF world welterweight title on a seventh round technical knockout to unbeaten champion Bongani Mwelase in South Africa on Friday (November 14).


Ali, who won and lost the Commonwealth welterweight title while he was living in Glossop last year, had to surrender his WBA Pan-African welterweight title to take part in the challenge.

Jamira's storyJamira's Story, a film made by the pupils of Longdendale Community Language College, has been accepted for the student film festival at the Imperial War Museum London - even though it was made by secondary school pupils, not by undergraduates, as most of the entries for the festival are. The East Midlands Regional Assembly has told High Peak borough council that 308 new homes a year must be built in the borough over the next 18 years. The 5,500 additional homes would be equivalent to a town the size of Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith combined. Details here.

Glossop Folk Train

The Glossop Folk Train leaves Manchester Piccadilly at 1849 (6.49pm) on the fourth Thursday of each month, with some of the best of the region's folk musicians performing live on the train all the way to Glossop.

Here the action moves to Glossop Labour Club for liquid refreshment and more live entertainment. Food can be ordered on the train and the club is fully accessible to wheelchair users.

Return is on the 2139 (9.39pm) train from Glossop, arriving into Piccadilly at 2212 (10.12pm).


There is no charge for the event - just the price of your ordinary train or Wayfarer ticket.

Glossopdale Community College Band will play festive tunes whilst Glossop Mountain Rescue Team will bring Father Christmas on his sleigh. The square will be filled with a fun fair and plenty of refreshments will be available - including free mince pies and mulled wine.

Cold Flame acoustic play The Junction Inn on High Street West on Sunday, November 30 in a free concert starting at 4.00pm which will also feature young blues guitarist Tim Malkin and singer-songwriter Brock.
A gun turret from the B29 Superfortress 'Overexposed' which crashed at Higher Shelf Stones on November 3, 1948, killing all 13 people on board, is part of a sixtieth anniversary exhibition at Glossop Heritage Centre in Henry Street in November.

The gun turret was recovered by Peter Jozefczyk and members of Glossop Mountain Rescue Team in June. Details here.



Jean HobsonGlossop artist Jean Hobson has a winter exhibition of recent paintings, prints and drawings - including new pictures of Glossop and Manchester - at Gifted, 31 High Street West, until the end of November.

Glossop Operatic and Dramatic Society will present the traditional family pantomime, Little Red Riding Hood, at Stage One in Glossopdale Community College from Tuesday, December 2 to Saturday, December 6. There will be samples on display, a demonstration, and an expert to answer questions. The Derbyshire Real Nappy Incentive Scheme offers £25 cashback on washable nappies and aims to reduce the quantity of nappies being sent to landfill sites.
